Nooooo Pooooo

Love Lush Karma Komba
Ok, so I tried to go No 'poo.  That's short for no shampoo.  Many reasons to do it, many reasons it may or may not work for you.  Being the semi crunchy type I am, I thought this would totally be for me.  I love not using soap on my face! (I use a mix of olive and castor oils, or unrefined organic coconut oil.) It totally didn't work for me.

I ran out of Lush shampoo way back in March.  Maybe earlier.  Deciding I didn't want to shell out the cash, I tried some other shampoos, only to have my scalp get dry and flaky.  One shampoo even left raw spots on my scalp.  Not cool.

So after some reading, I decided to give the no 'poo method a try.  I usually wash my hair every other day.  On the designated day, instead of shampoo and conditioner, I used a mix of baking soda and water, followed by a rinse of apple cider vinegar and water.  The first few days were actually good.  My scalp really felt better, and my hair didn't look too bad.  Three days, four days...my hair started feeling gross, so I repeated the mixture.  My scalp seemed to be in better shape, but my hair?  Ew.  I read more, tried the various techniques...to no avail.  By one week, my hair was so gross.  I could literally shape it with it's own oils, and it looked so nasty.  I caved and washed it.  Best feeling ever.

The "magical" combination
I tried again, same thing.  No matter what, I couldn't get past those 7 days.  I know all the things I read said that it might take 2-8 weeks for my hair to adjust, that like milk supply, your body produces what it needs...but I couldn't handle past 7.  Maybe if I shaved my head, it might just work.  Until I'm ready for that new look, I went back to Lush, and my locks are beautiful once again.  My scalp is not, but hopefully time will get that healthy again.  And maybe when I run out of shampoo again, in the middle of winter when it's not hot, and I can wear a hat daily, I'll try again.

  1. Go you for trying. If I don't wash my hair with 'shampoo for oily hair' daily, I'm a disaster. Once hour 25 hits since the last time I washed my hair, I could produce an oil slick with my locks.

    I'm just super oily. :(

  2. Yeah, seriously. It took me forever to get to every other day washes.
